Fan communities have long been treated as gatherings of passive consumers, audiences bound by emotional attachment yet producing nothing beyond their own enthusiasm.

The media scholar Henry Jenkins, however, reached a sharply different conclusion.

BTS, the South Korean group whose global fandom is known as ARMY, proved his point.

When BTS donated one million dollars to the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, ARMY organized the #MatchAMillion campaign and matched the sum within twenty-four hours, while volunteer translators independently maintained content in more than forty languages.
