Around 240 BCE, Eratosthenes of Cyrene measured the Earth from a single shadow. As Chief Librarian at Alexandria, he had read that on the summer solstice, sunlight reached the bottom of a deep well in Syene. At that same hour in Alexandria, a vertical gnomon cast a shadow tilted about 7.2 degrees from the upright. Two assumptions did the work. Let sunbeams arrive in parallel and let the Earth be a sphere; then, by alternate interior angles, that same 7.2 degrees spans the arc between the two cities. Since 7.2 is one-fiftieth of a full circle, the reported road distance of roughly 5,000 stadia, multiplied by fifty, yields a circumference within about 1.4 percent of the modern value.
